Points of Distinction

  • The UTRGV School of Medicine welcomed its first class of medical students in Summer 2016 with cutting-edge facilities and resources that will serve as an invaluable resource for the South Texas community.
  • Faculty and student researchers and members of UTRGV’s Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy, opened a new window to the universe as key contributors to the first direct detection of gravitational waves in September 2015.
  • UTRGV is home to the University of Texas System’s first competency-based education program, Total Education Experience, or TeX. The online application provides coursework via iPad technology for students in the biomedical sciences.

From the Gulf Coast to outer space, The University of Texas–Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) offers a unique learning environment. With more than 100 undergraduate and graduate programs to choose from, including engineering, marine biology, international business, and a school of medicine, UTRGV is one of the newest universities in Texas.   Our Center for Advanced Radio Astronomy (CARA) is a first-of-its-kind research, technology commercialization, and educational center. CARA’s STARGATE Center facilitates a public-private partnership between UTRGV and SpaceX that allows students to engage in one-on-one research with university scientists.   In the next few years, UTRGV will implement new professional and doctoral programs, giving students multiple opportunities to innovate and collaborate with faculty and leaders in industry, business, medicine, science, education, and technology.   Part of the UTRGV experience is student life, which includes living on campus in one of four residence halls or apartment complexes and linking up with one of the nearly 300 student organizations on campus.   With a student population of more than 28,000, UTRGV, the ninth-largest public university in Texas, offers educational opportunities in Rio Grande Valley locations including Brownsville, Edinburg, Harlingen, McAllen, Rio Grande City, and sunny South Padre Island.
