HUSTON-TILLOTSON UNIVERSITY (HT) nurtures a legacy of leadership and excellence in education that connects knowledge, power, passion, and values as part of its mission. Affiliated with both The United Methodist Church and the United Church of Christ, the institution is Austin’s only historically Black university. The student population of 1,001 undergraduates and graduates pursue associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees.
HT international students represent more than eighteen countries from China to Nigeria. The W.E.B. DuBois Honors Program provides students with a challenging curriculum above and beyond HT’s nineteen areas of study. HT’s African American Male Teacher Initiative funded by Apple Inc. provides one year of scholarship support to high-achieving freshmen who intend to pursue a career in education.
Major League Baseball great Jackie Robinson coached the men’s basketball team before he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers, and he later served as a trustee of the college. Today HT teams compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics as part of the Red River Athletic Conference.
Historical districts and an ever-growing number of venues surround the 23-acre east Austin campus, which is within walking distance of downtown.
