Prairie View, Texas

PRAIRIE VIEW A&M UNIVERSITY (PVAMU), founded in 1876, is the second oldest public institution of higher education in the state of Texas and the third largest Historically Black College/University (HBCU) in the nation.

Since its inception in 1876, PVAMU has opened its doors to any and every person—inside and outside of Texas—seeking a quality, first-class, four-year university experience.

PVAMU is situated in a rural part of Texas on one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. It is just an hour’s drive from Houston, two hours from Austin, and three hours from Dallas and San Antonio, some of the nation’s largest cities.

Through seven colleges and two schools, PVAMU boasts more than seventy degree programs leading to bachelor’s, as well as doctoral-level degrees in areas including engineering, arts, business, nursing, and criminal and juvenile justice. New majors are in African American studies and public health. Study abroad focuses on building global leaders through classroom instruction, the arts, and service-learning projects.

PVAMU is a Carnegie-classified R2–High Research Activity university, recognized for its high level of research activity, joining only eleven HBCUs and only four Texas A&M University System members with this elite status.

The university’s student athletes excel on and off the field, with many receiving All-Academic Team honors. They compete in NCAA Division I and enjoy a multi-million-dollar sports complex with a 15,000-seat football stadium, a world-class track facility, and baseball, softball, and soccer fields.
