THE PINE TREES form a sanctuary at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA), the newest member of The University of Texas System. Within the wonder and shelter of the Piney Woods, students explore the world, uncover their worth, and find themselves.

The university began a century ago as a teachers’ college in Texas’s oldest town, Nacogdoches. Today, it has grown into a regional institution comprising six colleges: business, education, fine arts, forestry and agriculture, liberal and applied arts, and sciences and mathematics.

SFA offers more than eighty bachelor’s and forty master’s degrees and added its fourth doctoral degree in 2023. Small class sizes ensure students receive personalized attention from faculty mentors. The main campus encompasses 421 acres that include 36 academic facilities, nine residence halls, and 68 acres of trails that wind through six gardens.

Because student support is a primary concern, SFA created the new Lumberjack Wellness Network to provide holistic well-being services. The Academic Assistance and Resource Center helps students get up to speed in tougher courses. More than 200 student organizations ensure everyone finds a place in the pines.

University faculty and staff believe in expanding student potential. That’s why SFA continues to add state-of-the-art buildings, new academic programs, and new study areas and eateries so Lumberjacks can get the most out of their college experience.

SFA athletic teams compete in eighteen intercollegiate sports at the NCAA Division I level and hold 106 team championships, two national team championships, and one national championship. Cheer and dance teams hold 36 national championships.
